Katran Stool Cover – a Free Crochet Pattern

Are you ready to make your Katran stool cover?

Katran crochet stool cover by Nerissa Muijs in Scheepjes Secret Garden http://shrsl.com/jj6p

Why Katran?  Well, katran is a Hindi word which explains the beautiful offcut pieces of fabric which are the by product of weaving mills.  Often farmers will collect these waste fabrics, spin it into heavy yarns, and make furniture in their off-season.  These stunning pieces inspired me to use Scheepjes Secret Garden to bring this stool to life.

The materials for this project are available from your favourite Scheepjes stockist in the Benelux, in North America you can order the yarn from Love Knitting or Knotty House (in Canada) or if you’re in the UK or anywhere else in the world Wool Warehouse is the place to go.

For your 28cm diameter stool, you should ask your favourite retailer.  Failing that, you’ll be able to find them in discount home stores all over the place, often with a very ugly print that is calling out to be covered with something beautiful!

Ta-DAA! Katran Crochet Stool Cover

I’m so excited to share this with you, my Katran stool cover is finished!

I’m beyond happy with the result of this project.  From the moment I was inspired I was consumed.  I had to choose my colours and make this as fast as I could.  And fast is just the right word – this is something you can whip up in a few hours, which after slaving for months on huge projects, has been a breath of fresh air.  It’s actually exactly the right medicine for me.

The way the colours change almost randomly is exactly what I was hoping for, I think it has captured the scrappy sari silk look that I was going for.

I’m going to have the pattern ready for you in a week’s time, so between now and then assemble your materials.

You’ll need:

3 balls of Scheepjes Secret Garden in your chosen colourway.  I went for 709 Lily Pond.

A 28cm diameter stool.  I got mine from Scheepjes, and you should ask your favourite retailer.  Failing that, you’ll be able to find them in discount home stores.

In North America you can order the yarn from Love Knitting or Knotty House (in Canada)

Or if you’re in the UK or anywhere else in the world Wool Warehouse is the place to go.

Secret Garden Crochet Pattern – WIP

Last week I told you about this gorgeous new yarn that had landed on my doorstep, and now I want to share a progress report with you.

Scheepjes Secret Garden in in 709 Lily Pond and 704 Lavender Beds

I’m making a new stool cover to be able to interchange with my Egyptian Star Flower Stool cover and it’s really coming to life in just the way that I imagined.  The katran inspiration was right on the money!

So, do learn from a mistake that I made here: the stool was almost finished when I realised that I made it way too big, so had to frog it.  So, no matter how much I love the yarn, it’s not made for frogging.  It’s definitely not a yarn you can just rip out, you have to be careful and take it slow, otherwise you’ll destroy it.

Having said that, the effort is worth it.  Doesn’t it make a beautiful ball?

So I have the final amounts ready, you’ll need three balls of Secret Garden in your favourite colourway.

Get the yarn from  Wool Warehouse for £4.39 (€5.39) per ball with global shipping.

In North America, Love Knitting/Crochet stocks it for $5.50 USD per ball.

In the Benelux, go to any one of the great Scheepjes stockists, and if you’re looking for a lovely day out head to Sparkelz-Creatief in Zuidhoorn, just outside Groningen.

Stay tuned for the big reveal next week!

New Crochet Project: Secret Garden

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a new project with you.  It’s actually been a while since I’ve worked on a new project that I’m able to share with you!

For this new design I’m going to be working with the glorious Scheepjes Secret Garden in either one of the two colourways below, Lily Pond and Lavender Beds.

Scheepjes Secret Garden in in 709 Lily Pond and 704 Lavender Beds

The design is inspired by the Hindi word katran which is a word that describes small pieces of cloth by-products from weaving mills.  There is a movement in India where these offcuts are collected by farmers in their off-seasons and spun into heavy yarn to make traditional daybeds.

The Secret Garden make me think of these gorgeous Indian yarns which are just a riot of colour with no real order to the changes.  There’s a real handspun quality to the yarn which I love.

For my project you’ll need 3 skeins of Secret Garden in your chosen colourway, and now I’ll tell you a bit more about the yarn itself:

Secret Garden is a blended yarn, comprised of 20% silk, 20% cotton and 60% polyester.  The silk and cotton give the yarn life and the polyester keeps it soft, and also keeps the price point down to a level where it can be considered affordable.  For example, Wool Warehouse stocks Secret Garden for £4.39 (€5.39) and in North America, Love Knitting/Crochet prices it at $5.50 USD. In comparison to other, similar yarns, this is extraordinary.

The yarn comes in 50 gram balls, and calls for a 4mm hook.  For your 50g you’ll get 93 metres of yarn.

Now, I’ll be back next week with a progress report, but in the meantime I want you to take a look at an earlier design of mine, the Pina Colada shawl from YARN, the Tropical Issue:

Pina Colada shawl by Nerissa Muijs on Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pina-colada-shawl-2

I designed this shawl with two shades of Secret Garden which blend together using short rows.  The shawl is lovely and soft, and has a beautiful drape.  I find it perfect to wrap around my shoulders on a chilly afternoon, and it’s also squishy enough to curl it around my neck as an oversized scarf for when I’m out cycling.

It’s a challenging pattern, so not one that I would recommend to a beginner, and it’s enormously satisfying seeing the colours change and the contrast grow.

YARN is available at the usual stockists in the Netherlands and Belgium.  I’ve seen it in Sticks and Cups in Utrecht (along with all the copies of the After Party booklets) and it’s also on Wool Warehouse for £5.95 (€7.30).

Stay tuned for the next installment!

Yarn Day: Secret Garden

This week Scheepjes launched another brand new yarn.  Seriously, I can’t keep up with them all, there are so many!  This one is the silk blend Secret Garden.

secret garden.jpg

Among the Blogger Tribe, this one has been much anticipated.  We were lucky enough to be given a sneak peek and there was lots of oohing and aahing and rubbing yarn on our faces.

So I’m excited to give you a little show and tell!

Scheepjes Secret Garden. Available via Deramores - bit.ly/2d3dfNJ and Wool Warehouse - bit.ly/woolwarehouse #scheepjes #missneriss

I have these three colours – Rambling Blooms, Herb Garden and Falling Blossom for a top secret project that I’m working on, but I also wanted to show you how it crochets.  I whipped up this granny:

Scheepjes Secret Garden. Available via Deramores - bit.ly/2d3dfNJ and Wool Warehouse - bit.ly/woolwarehouse #scheepjes #missneriss

It shows off the colours in Rambling Blooms beautifully, don’t you think?

About the yarn; it’s a silk (20%), cotton (20%) and polyester (60%) blend, and the recommended hook/needles sizes is 4mm.  I’ve gone up to a 5mm though, as I think that suits my style much better.  The fabric of my granny is quite dense, so it would be forgiving using a 6mm even.  It’s available in 10 shades, I’m looking forward to trying them all.

I see that this yarn is going to be a knitter’s dream.  I’m already thinking of the beautiful shawls and tops I’m going to be seeing in the very near future!

The yarn goes on sale today, so do keep an eye on your favourite stockists in the Benelux, and Wool Warehouse and Deramores will also have you covered no matter where you live in the world.  If you can’t find it straight away, pop back again for another look.
