Knit and Crochet Inspiration for Valentine’s Day

I don’t usually worry too much about Valentine’s Day. When I was younger I was chronically single (and liked it that way), and we’ve never really made a big deal about it in the 10 years we’ve been together. I mean, it’s lovely to celebrate, but it’s not important to me if it’s on the 14th of Feb or the 14th of September, if you know what I mean? My husband is a total romantic anyway, so he doesn’t need a special day to remind him.

But because I love to celebrate love, I’ve found some gorgeous Valentine’s Day inspired projects and ideas for you – focusing on spoiling yourself!

My Instagram friend Vanessa has made a series of gorgeous project bag and hand dyed yarn kits. I’m absolutely in love with this one – the hearts even look crocheted. and the yarn, wow. It’s gorgeous red with sparkle, and I love me some sparkle! Check out the full range here.

This little Bigly Migly is just the sweetest! The pattern is a free Ravelry download by Autumn Leaf, here.

I love mug cozies. I’m not often out and about drinking coffee, but when I am, I want something this cute to stop my fingers from burning! It’s a free pattern from The Stitchin Mommy.

Aren’t these coasters cute? Tatsiana at Lillabjorn made these and they look gorgeous. They’d make a great stash-buster project, don’t you think?

While not knit or crochet, I had to include this tutorial by Tonya at A Love of Family and Home. Tonya shows us how to make those gorgeous felted roses, I think I’ll have to do it too…

Don’t these look lovely and snuggly? Susan from Felted Button has designed these and they’re on Ravelry as a free download. They’re perfect for that romantic Valentine’s Night out in this freezing weather!

Ok Aussies. I realise that it’s a massive heatwave there right now, so even though these aren’t Valentine related, they’re hot weather related! And in all honestly, when I lived in Alice Springs I had thongs (flip flops) for all occasions. These can totally be “Date Night Thongs,” right? These are my own design.

Have a great Valentine’s Day, whether you’re married, single, in love or out of it. Just use it as an excuse to eat great chocolate!

How to Use IFTTT to Share an Instagram Photo to Your Facebook Page

We all have our little tricks to make our social media life easier, and this one is my absolute favourite. If you haven’t heard of IFTTT (if this then that) then you need to get onto it straight away. You can connect pretty much any channel thanks to the wonderful world of APIs.

One of the most common themes that came up over the weekend I’ve just had with an amazing group of bloggers (more about that later), is “How do I share my crochet photos from my Instagram to my Facebook page, rather than my own private Facebook?” Instagram only allows you to choose either your timeline OR your Page, and if you’re like me you don’t always want to choose. I don’t want to bombard my friends with crochet photos – they see enough! Just like my crochet family isn’t that excited about toddler pics.

So, what you need is an IFTTT recipe. And lucky for you, I have set one up that works perfectly.

Basically what you need to do is click that image above (thanks for providing it ifttt.com), create an account within a few quick steps, and activate your Instagram and Facebook pages there as channels. I won’t tell you how to do this because IFTTT is so intuitive you don’t need my help.

All you have to do is check that recipe, double check the hashtag you want to use, and activate it. I have set #crochet as my hashtag, so whenever I post an Instagram and tag it on the image itself or in the comments, it will automatically upload to my MissNeriss Facebook page.

Here’s an example:

I posted the below photo on Instagram while on holiday, and because I thought those people who follow me on Facebook but are not on Instagram might like it, I tagged it #crochet.

And here you see it, also on Facebook, with the same caption and a link to the original Instagram.Now, I know that it’s possible to choose your Facebook page as your connected Facebook account rather than your timeline, but this tool allows you to have both your timeline and your page linked and you don’t have to do anything. You don’t have to click the little Facebook button on the image editor in Instagram, you don’t have to rely on a good enough wifi connection for the image to upload to both locations (like I was on holiday). IFTTT is a background rules engine, and will take care of everything for you.

Consider this little how-to an introduction to the engine, because once you dive in, you’ll be hooked. Trust me. Want to save your Instagrams to your Dropbox? Want to congratulate yourself when you meet your Fitbit goal? Want a message if it’s going to rain tomorrow? IFTTT does it all.

Crocheting for a Cause

Sometimes a cause appears and you can’t not participate. For most of the Facebook world this year it was the ALS ice bucket challenge. For me it was Breast Cancer Awareness.

You see, a friend of mine was diagnosed earlier this year. Seemingly out of nowhere, she was flat out one day building a new business and community, and then wham! Lumpectomy, radiotherapy, and now chemotherapy, followed by five years of medication.

Lana started a campaign to encourage women to stay on top of checking their breasts, which is something I thought I did regularly, until I stumbled across this video:

I had no idea of some of these symptoms, and holy shit, I had one of them. Panic ensued, and I was off to the doc faster than you can spell mammogram. I was referred quickly to have a scan and ultrasound, and after a week of extreme stress I was given the all-clear. Thankfully I was not one of the 1 in almost 230 women my age who develop breast cancer. But, I have to monitor my breasts very closely to make sure there are no changes. Quite the near-miss to say the least.

But what does this have to do with crochet? Well. A while back, via via on Instagram, I came across a fabulous post requesting submissions for a Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness blanket, all the way home in Australia. You see, October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the timing was perfect.

How could I not participate? I immediately got to crocheting my square, digging around in my stash until I found the right colours, and whipped this up, based on a pattern by local designer Pukado:

I popped it in the post, and this week I saw the latest blanket ready to be stitched together – what a beautiful, love-filled blanket!

It feels great that I could help contribute towards such a wonderful, important cause, and that somewhere in Australia, a woman in great need of comfort is going to receive this blanket and know that there are thousands of women out there supporting her.

It’s taken ages, but finally I get to make Kevin the minion! I’m loving this little guy, and can’t wait to see how he ends up when he’s all done.

I initially went searching for a pattern, but the only one that I loved was All About Ami’s but it was much too big, so I decided to make my own.

He’s working up quickly too, which is what I love about amigurumi projects – instant gratification!

How much do you love minions? Probably not as much as I do….

Instagram Action

I love taking photos, but my time is so limited that I never seem to get round to taking fabulously constructed shots with great lighting. Coupled with a daughter who will not sit still to take a sharp shot and a husband I never see during daylight hours, my model opportunities are often limited to desperate selfies! Honestly, most photos are taken on my couch at 11pm with my iPad before items get wrapped and shipped. Because of that, Instagram is my absolute best friend. I can share what I like there and it’s ok that my images aren’t professionally finished. Poor lighting isn’t the end of the world. I just try not to post blurred photos…

Here’s some of my latest creations that have only really made it as far as Instagram:
