YARN Blog Hop: Chunky Knits for Christmas?

Last week I shared my excitement for the launch of Scheepjes YARN – Folk. Do you already have your hands on a copy?

Together with all the other designers who contributed to this issue, I’m joining in on a blog hop to tell you about how my Frida shawl came to life. Kirsten at Haak Maar Raak posted about her adorable Christmas Cuddles on Monday; if you haven’t seen that, you must ooh and ahh over the adorable Santa and his elf.

You’ll have seen my Frida shawl by now. It’s a chunky grey knit with colourful floral embroidery and a buckle to close.

So how did I come up with it? Well, I love the look of embroidery on knit and crochet, and I love a chunky knit. And last winter I saw these cool fleecy wraps which had a buckle to keep them in place and thought: what a great idea, that would work so well in knit/crochet! You can relate I’m sure: I see crochet and knit designs in just about every piece of fabric I come across.

So I put those three ideas together and started knitting. I knit the shawl well in advance, but then I came up against all sorts of head scratching moments when it came to the embroidery. It just wasn’t working out for me. The yarn I had chosen for the embroidery was too fine (I had originally chosen Scheepjes Sweet Treat) and was getting lost in the bulky knit.

So I thought perhaps I should ditch the embroidery altogether and try felt appliques:

Again, it just wasn’t working. The felt was all wrong, and I was starting to feel the stress of the idea not working out how I had intended. In a fit of frustration I balled the shawl and threw it in a corner for a couple of weeks, while I did something else to reignite my creativity.

When I was ready to come back and try again, I decided to use a heavier weight yarn for the embroidery, and settled on Scheepjes Cahlista. I also enlisted the help of a soluble stabiliser and they were a golden combination! All of a sudden it all came together and the creative juices were in full flow.

After all the frustration and stress, I felt the most incredible feeling of relief and satisfaction to box this up and send it off. And now, seeing it out in the wild I just can’t stop smiling about it!

Our Tribe, My Tribe – Shawl Reveal

Happy New Year!

I hope your start to 2018 have been as great as mine – we took an amazing family holiday to San Diego over Christmas, which was my first ever trip to North America, and I LOVED it! San Diego is a fantastic city, I could almost pretend I was in Australia. We ate our Christmas dinner outside in the sunshine, the kids played in the pool (well, the heated jacuzzi. It wasn’t that warm) and we just completely unplugged and enjoyed being together.

And now we’re back to reality, and it’s reveal time!

Just before Christmas I talked to you about the Our Tribe yarn collection from Scheepjes, and that I have my very own colourway, MissNeriss, and how proud I am. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the warm and positive messages and reactions, it was just the best way to close out the year.

I’ve finished working on my Our Tribe, My Tribe shawl, and have a couple of versions to share with you!

The first is the Original, using a single colour (MissNeriss, obviously):

And I’ve also created a fade version too!

For my fade I used New Leaf, Look at What I made, and Jellina Creations. They’re three colours that to look at them in a ball you probably wouldn’t consider them as complementary, but they’re actually a great match, thanks to the common elements.

For something bit different, I’m going to host a mini-CAL! So when the pattern launches next week, I’m going to start making a new one, and post progress pics as I go, and I want you to join me! That way we can work on it together, chat about how much we love the yarn (obviously!) and I can help you through any parts where you might become stuck.

I’m going to host the mini-CAL on Instagram, under the tag #ourtribemytribe and to be the first to know about the pattern release (and to get a discount), make sure you’re signed up to receive my newsletter which will go out at the beginning of next week!

Ahead of the pattern launch and mini-CAL, make sure you get hold of the yarn!

For the single colour shawl you’ll need two skeins of Scheepjes My Tribe in MissNeriss (or another colourway should you prefer, and for the fade you’ll need three colourways, including New Leaf, Look at What I Made and Jellina Creations. Or of course a three colour fade in your choice. Be sure to choose colourways with similar elements throughout.

Christmas Bunting

Today is the very last day of the Scheepjeswol Christmas Blog Hop and I’m so sad that it’s over, yet very happy to be able to send it off, hopefully in style!

How incredibly beautiful is Heike from Made with Loops bag? Fair Isle, I promise you, will be absolutely THE biggest yarn trend of 2015, so get onto it!

Here’s today’s project from me, some lovely and very simple Christmas Bunting.

I had some left over yarn once I had finished my Christmas Wreath and I wanted to use it up for something fun to decorate the house with this Christmas, and I just love bunting, so bunting it was!

I came up with a very simple half double crochet pattern that works up in a jiffy. Each flag can be made in under ten minutes! It’s a great scrap project too, so you don’t have to worry too much about how much yarn you have lying around.

What you’ll need:

Scheepjeswol Stone Washed in five colours. I used the same as in my wreath: 801, 807, 815, 813 and 814.
4mm hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Measuring tape

How To:

Choose one of your colours, then start with a slip stitch, and chain 2. Half double crochet into the second chain from the hook and there you will have the foundation of the triangle to start building your bunting.
From here on, you will need to increase at the end of each row with 2 half double crochets into the last stitch.
Row 2: Chain 2, 2 HDC (half double crochet) into the next stitch (3 stitches in total), turn.
Row 3: Chain 2, HDC into the next stitch, 2 HDC into the last stitch (4 stitches), turn.
Row 4: Chain 2, HDC into the next 2 stitches, 2 HDC into the last stitch (5 stitches), turn.
Continue this pattern until you have a stitch count of 17 (16 rows in total), then tie off and weave in the ends, making sure you keep the nice point at the bottom of the triangle.

Make 3 of each colour (or more if you’d like to make it longer)

Here’s a chart to help make it a bit easier:

To join the bunting, take your lightest colour (801) and start chaining, working the end in as you go. Chain for 60cm to create a long enough tie, then attach to the first bunting triangle by single crocheting into the first and then all 17 stitches along. Continue to chain, leaving about 8cm in between triangles. Repeat this pattern until you have attached all your triangles to the chain, then to finish off, chain a further 60cm before cutting the yarn and weaving in the end. The finished bunting will measure about 4m in length.

And you’re all done! Now all that’s left to do is find the perfect spot to hang it!
