WIP: Peek-a-Boo!

Has a week slipped by already? The flu has been in residence here for the last week. Wow, what a horrible virus it has been too. I’m only just starting to come out into the light again, and my husband, well, the poor thing is on his fourth day in bed. In all the years we’ve been together, he’s taken his first sick days from work.

I’ve been so unwell I haven’t even been able to crochet. Can you even imagine?! Luckily I’ve still made good progress on my Peek-a-Boo. This Stone Washed XL wrap basically crochets itself.

I’m actually already at the stage where I’m choosing buttons. Although I think I’ll let my daughter decide which she likes (I’m going to guess she goes for the flowers). Which would you choose?

I also need to start writing the instructions. You can see, not very far into that yet!

Hopefully next week this will be finished, and I’ll have been able to beg or bribe my daughter into modelling it so I can show you how it looks!

Until then, beware of the flu!

New Yarn, New Design

It’s that time again. Time to start working on something new. And time to revisit my old flame: Stone Washed XL.

You already know how much I love this yarn, it’s such a pleasure to work with. I also love the pastels that were added to the range last summer, they’re all just so pretty.

For this project I’m using the lovely soft pink (860) and after many requests, am making a child’s version of the Peek-a-Boo Button Wrap!

This Easy Start tab, is without a doubt the single most innovative idea from Scheepjes. This is them really thinking about the user experience. I can’t rave about it enough.

For now, I’m off to crack on with this Peek-a-Boo. What are you up to this week?

Crochet Brioche Beanie – WIP

Last week I shared with you the beginning of a new project, using a crochet Brioche stitch that I’ve figured out.

This week I’m showing you some of the work in progress.

I love the stitch pattern, the colour change is so effective. At first glance it really looks like knit!

And then there’s the decrease:

This took a bit of figuring out, but the overall effect is amazing.

Then there’s the trim:

I’m considering making this a bit longer, because it’s going also turn up:

And the final touch? The pom pom! According to The Guardian, pom pom beanies are right on trend in 2015, and lucky for me I’m all over it!

But aren’t these colours just insane? The vibrancy of the Scheepjes Colour Crafter is amazing. I haven’t edited the images to boost the saturation at all. Quite the opposite, in fact! Orange and hot pink (or is it really Shocking Pink?) are probably my favourite colour combination. They’re just such happy shades. I have a cousin who would rock these colours and my aunt would easily pull off decorating her house using these two. In fact I think she may have even done it!

Next week, the reveal! And you know what the best part is, I’ve made this hat to be One Size Fits All! Well, most…

GREG Mystery CAL

I’ve been thinking for a while now about joining a CAL*. I never have, mostly because the level of commitment required to finish is much higher than I feel I can ever achieve. For instance, my Mood Blanket from 2014 is still stalled in February!

However. I decided it was time to find the commitment and join in. And serendipitously, Shelley from Spincushions announced a brand new one, called GREG.

Why GREG, you ask? Well, it was a bit of a joke that turned into a cool acrostic title: Grand and Resplendent Endeavour in Gaiety. Cool, hey?

So then there was the task of choosing the yarn. I have a lot of yarn in my stash, but not enough of one colour to make an entire blanket, and I really wanted to follow Shelley’s lead and make a solid colour blanket. I hit the ordering machine and after about 45 minutes going back and forth between yarns and their costs, I chose Drops Belle.

The yarn is a Cotton, Viscose and Linen blend and uses a 4mm hook. It’s soft and has a slight sheen, but isn’t shiny like mercerised yarn. It can also be machine washed which is a real bonus when making a blanket.

I immediately had to make a test square to see how it felt, and thankfully it was a good choice. The square looked great!

Then all I had to do was wait for the CAL to start. I’m not alone in thinking that the waiting is the hardest part, am I?

Finally (well, a week and a half later), the first square was released. TOM (Talismatic and Officially Marvellous) is beautiful and wonderfully mindful. I have a feeling that all the squares will be great exercises in mindfulness actually.

Now I have to wait for the second instalment, in a few days…

*If you haven’t hear the term CAL before, it means Crochet Along, and is essentially a joint project between a designer (or designers) and anybody who would like to join. It’s essentially like a giant group crochet session, with everyone sharing pictures and experiences, and it really builds a community.

Peek-a-Boo Button Wrap Video Tutorial, by It’s All in a Nutshell

I am SO excited to be able to bring this video tutorial to you! When I first created the Peek-a-Boo Button Wrap I thought: I should make a video for this, but well, I talk a bit fast (thanks nerves) and I don’t have a video camera, so I didn’t.

But when the opportunity arose for Esther from It’s all in a Nutshell to do this for me I grabbed it! Of course you would know Esther if you use videos with crochet, she’s the voice behind the Sophie’s Universe videos and the recent Flight of Fancy CAL videos. Quite a pedigree, wouldn’t you agree?

There are also some insanely good tips and tricks on Esther’s site – tips that hadn’t even occurred to me, including her “No More Mistakes” chart here:

In the video Esther used Scheepjes Bloom which is a comparable weight to the Stone Washed XL and a great summer alternative.

Join my Pinterest Crochet Community?

We all love Pinterest. You KNOW how much I love Pinterest. I’ve been happily pinning away for a few years now and I love how I can always find inspiration. When I first started crocheting it was my main source of patterns (I had never heard of Ravelry) and now I mostly love it for the pure visual pleasure that it brings me. Bright, colourful images, incredible projects; it just makes me happy.

This is my favourite pin right now (for obvious reasons):

So I decided I want to share the joy, and build a Pinterest community. Just this week I created a new board, called “Obsessed with Crochet – Community” and I’ve opened it up to everyone who loves crochet.

The concept is that you join the board, either by commenting below with your Pinterest ID or sending an email to missnerisscrochet@gmail.com and then I’ll add you and together we go crazy pinning all the pins! (Clicking the image below will also take you straight to the board so you can follow it too.)

I’d love you to pin your projects, your inspiration, your designs. The only real rules are that you try to pin from the original source, and not pin too many pins in a row. Oh, and keep it crochet related. Over time I’ll see about adding more boards, for knitting and general yarn porn. But we need to learn to walk before we can run, right?

The Granny Smith Market Bag Free Pattern and Tutorial

Goodness, what a title to a blog post!

But it does mean that the pattern is here. Once again I’ve created a handy PDF file that you can download from here safely.

I’ve also created a separate file with a photo tutorial of the special stitch repeat that this design uses. It’s a really simple increase method, but is convoluted and makes me scratch my head and I came up with it!

What You’ll Need

4 x 25g mini skeins of Scheepjes Catona*
1 x 50g skein of Scheepjes Catona*
4mm crochet hook
A tapestry needle to sew in your ends.
Cute scissors (one can never have cute enough scissors).

Meet the Granny Smith and Red Delicious Market Bags!

Here they are!

I had this idea about a year ago, but it has taken me this long to actually find the time to sit down and figure out my idea on paper and in yarn.

I’m so happy with the results! I had to take my shopping out of the Red Delicious to actually photograph it – I’ve been using it every single day since I finished making it!

And do you know what the best part about these bags are? Look:

They fold up into little purses that can fit straight into your handbag or bike bags and you don’t have to worry at all about all the space they’re not taking up!

The bags are designed using the mini skeins of Scheepjes Catona, which you can pick up at loads of great retailers in NL and Belgium, or via Deramores internationally (they ship everywhere!).

Bloom Flip Flops Free Pattern

Being Australian Flip Flops are my national footwear. Except, we don’t call them “flip flops” in Australia, but instead their real, actual scientific name – Thongs.

Back when I lived in Alice Springs I had thongs for every occasion. I had going out thongs, nipping to the shops thongs, doing the gardening thongs, masseur thongs, beach thongs. Remember that scene from Forrest Gump where Bubba mentions all the different types of shrimp (which are actually prawns, btw)? Well that’s me and thongs.

However, it’s taken me until now to actually make a pair for myself, and they’re crackers!And not only did I make myself a pair, I created a pattern for them too!

Bloom Flip Flops

I used Scheepjes Bloom for the design, which is a great woven worsted weight yarn, and is slightly mercerised. It’s just perfect for this sort of project. It won’t discolour, and nor will it break easily. Plus it’s available in about a million colours. (Well, almost 60. Australians are also prone to exaggeration.)

You can pick up Scheepjes Bloom at any Scheepjes retailer, Caro’s Atelier* in NL or Wool Warehouse* Deramores* internationally.

You can pick up the Scheepjes Flip Flop soles at Deramores* too.

One great retailer in NL is Pera and Pasha (and they stock the Bloom too, so two birds, one stone!).
