WIP: Peek-a-Boo!

Has a week slipped by already?  The flu has been in residence here for the last week.  Wow, what a horrible virus it has been too.  I’m only just starting to come out into the light again, and my husband, well, the poor thing is on his fourth day in bed.  In all the years we’ve been together, he’s taken his first sick days from work.

I’ve been so unwell I haven’t even been able to crochet.  Can you even imagine?!  Luckily I’ve still made good progress on my Peek-a-Boo.  This Stone Washed XL wrap basically crochets itself.

I’m actually already at the stage where I’m choosing buttons.  Although I think I’ll let my daughter decide which she likes (I’m going to guess she goes for the flowers).  Which would you choose?

I also need to start writing the instructions.  You can see, not very far into that yet!

Hopefully next week this will be finished, and I’ll have been able to beg or bribe my daughter into modelling it so I can show you how it looks!

Until then, beware of the flu!

New Yarn, New Design

It’s that time again.  Time to start working on something new. And time to revisit my old flame: Stone Washed XL.

You already know how much I love this yarn, it’s such a pleasure to work with. I also love the pastels that were added to the range last summer, they’re all just so pretty.

For this project I’m using the lovely soft pink  (860) and after many requests, am making a child’s version of the Peek-a-Boo Button Wrap!

This Easy Start tab, is without a doubt the single most innovative idea from Scheepjes.  This is them really thinking about the user experience.  I can’t rave about it enough.

For now, I’m off to crack on with this Peek-a-Boo.  What are you up to this week?

Chunky Crochet Brioche Cowl Reveal and How To

Chunky Crochet Brioche Cowl - free pattern available from missneriss.com.

It’s here!  Last week I was showing you the gorgeous Scheepjes Vinci yarn that I was working with, and this week here’s the result!  A beautiful crochet brioche cowl that has barely left my neck since it was completed.

I even had to take a selfie or two at the top of a mountain!

It was so cold up there, I needed that cowl let me tell you!

One of the cool things about this cowl, and what the photos don’t really show you (except that top one up there) is that the cowl is reversible!  So, if you prefer vertical colour stripes like I do, you wear it that way, but if you’re more into horizontal, just flip it over and you have a totally different accessory.

So, let’s get down to business.  I’ve created a pdf of the pattern for you.  The pattern also has a photo tutorial on how to do the crochet brioche stitch.  What would you think about possibly seeing a video tutorial?  Should I finally dip my toes in and make one?  Let me know in the comments.

As always, please do share your projects with me on social media.  You know I’m all over Instagram like a bad smell, so tag me @miss__neriss (that’s with two “_”) and also use the hashtag #obsessedwithcrochet.  This is a little community I’m going to build, with more info coming soon…

Click the heading below to be taken to the pattern, and I hope you enjoy!!

Show and Tell: New Yarn, New Crochet Brioche Design

Hello from Amazing Austria!
Alpbach forest by missneriss

Alpbach Forest by MissNeriss
I’m lucky enough to be on holiday in one of the most beautiful places on earth and because I’m really not a skier, I made sure I brought these beauties along with me!

Scheepjes Vinci in colours 9 and 21
Scheepjes Vinci in colours 9 and 21
This is the lovely Scheepjes Vinci, a 60/40% wool/acrylic blend that is just the softest bulky yarn ever. It has the warmth of wool and the softness of acrylic, which I love. Especially as I’m wool-sensitive and a bit of a Merino snob as you know!

The yarn calls for an 8mm hook (or needles), but for this project I’m going up a couple of sizes to a 10mm hook.  I’m also using colours 9 and 21 for this project.

So what am I making? Well from the title you already know that it’s crochet brioche, and you know I’m in the Alps and I’ve already made a Brioche Beanie, so because I need to keep warm I’m making a cowl!

I love the knit look and the reversible pattern of the crochet brioche, it’s just so versatile!

It won’t be long and I’ll have more photos of the finished cowl, and not to mention: the tutorial!

2016 – Another Inspired Year of Crochet?

Happy New Year!

Last week I took a look back at the inspiring year of crochet that was 2015, and this week I’m going to take a look forward.

Firstly though, thanks for all your lovely comments on social media about my health – it’s my number one goal this year to sort it out.  I’m sure it’s totally fine, but I’m an anxious person.  So having something hanging over my head – imagined or not – is stressful.

Anyway, crochet!

This year I want MissNeriss to be all about community and sharing.  Actually, this is what I’ve wanted it to be all along, and I made a few attempts in the past, but 2016 is the year it happens!

Late last year I created a Pinterest community, where we can all share our crochet inspirations.  Have you seen it?  I’d love you to join, by the way.

Just click through to the board and follow the instructions. Or comment below, but make sure you use the same email ID that is linked to your Pinterest account, otherwise I can’t find you.

I’m also considering starting a Facebook group for others who are just as obsessed with crochet.  I know, there are seemingly a million groups out there for crochet lovers, but some fit better than others, know what I mean?  What do you think?  Would you join me?

And while we’re on social, you know by now that I’m completely bananas about Instagram.  It’s another goal this year to post more photos, and to interact even more with amazing people there.  I’m also planning on starting a blog/insta series, where I’ll share my favourite Instagram photos from the last week.  I’m working on a hashtag to use to keep track of all the pics, but if you want to make sure you don’t miss out, please follow me so we can connect!

And finally (well, not finally, but enough for now!), I’m hoping to post more tech tips.  I loved putting those together, so if there’s something mysterious about blogging, social media, automation, or whatever, leave a comment here or on FB and I’ll see if I can work on it for you.

Oh! I can’t leave without talking a bit about designs that are in the works. I’m busy with a few project together with Scheepjes – going back to Stone Washed, my great love.  Plus at least two projects using their beautiful Mohair and Alpaca Rhythm yarns.  There are also a couple of top secret projects that I’m dying to tell you about, but then I’d have to kill you….

I’ve just finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, and it has inspired me truly.  So, expect some Big Magic from me this year!

What Big Magic can I expect from you?  Happy 2016!

Crochet Brioche Beanie Free Pattern

I know, I know.

This has taken me ages to do.  I have a load of excuses; you all know – December is crazy!

But here it is!  The pattern for the Brioche Beanie!

I’m sorry Dutch ladies, this pattern is only in English right now.  I’d love to translate it for you, but well, you know, time.

I’ve created a handy pdf so you can work on the design offline, or open it in your e-reader.  It’s a bit photo heavy, so do think twice before printing.  Included are step by step photo tutorials on how to create the brioche stitch itself, and also how to decrease and shape the hat.

This design is made using Scheepjes Colour Crafter. You can pick up the yarn at Scheepjes retailers all over the Benelux, or internationally from Deramores, Wool Warehouse, and at Paradise Fibers in North America!

I hope you enjoy making this hat, it’s really fun and easy to do once you get the hang of the stitch and the coolest part is that it’s totally reversible!  So if you prefer horizontal stripes, go for it!

Ps.  Coming soon is a cowl pattern too!  Stay tuned, and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Crochet Brioche Beanie – WIP

Last week I shared with you the beginning of a new project, using a crochet Brioche stitch that I’ve figured out.

Brioche Work in Progress, using Scheepjes Colour Crafter

This week I’m showing you some of the work in progress.

I love the stitch pattern, the colour change is so effective.  At first glance it really looks like knit!

And then there’s the decrease:IMG_2380

This took a bit of figuring out, but the overall effect is amazing.

Then there’s the trim:IMG_2378

I’m considering making this a bit longer, because it’s going also turn up: I'm considering making this a bit longer, because it's going

And the final touch?  The pom pom!  According to The Guardian, pom pom beanies are right on trend in 2015, and lucky for me I’m all over it!

But aren’t these colours just insane?  The vibrancy of the Scheepjes Colour Crafter is amazing.  I haven’t edited the images to boost the saturation at all.  Quite the opposite, in fact!  Orange and hot pink (or is it really Shocking Pink?) are probably my favourite colour combination.  They’re just such happy shades.  I have a cousin who would rock these colours and my aunt would easily pull off decorating her house using these two.  In fact I think she may have even done it!

Next week, the reveal!  And you know what the best part is, I’ve made this hat to be One Size Fits All!  Well, most…

It’s Yarn Day!

Look what arrived a few days ago: Scheepjes Catona, the start of a new project

It’s a lovely pile of Scheepjes Catona Denim.

Scheepjes Catona, the start of a new project

I chose a selection of some of my favourite colours with the intention of working on a tapestry crochet project.

Doesn’t it look gorgeous, just as a decoration?

Scheepjes Catona, the start of a new project

The yarn itself is a 100% cotton yarn, in a very similar style to the famous cotton 8, but with a lovely denim effect and ever so slight colour variation.  It’s suited to a 3mm hook and is soft and easy on the hands.

I’m making a stool cover for a little “krukje” that I picked up in Action last week, and I’m hoping that I can even write the pattern for it in Dutch!

Check back next week, I’ll have the finished project for you.  I’ve been powering through it and there’ll be more photos on Instagram through the week, so please nip over there to keep up to date!  It feels great to be overflowing with Crochet Mojo.

GREG Mystery CAL

I’ve been thinking for a while now about joining a CAL*. I never have, mostly because the level of commitment required to finish is much higher than I feel I can ever achieve. For instance, my Mood Blanket from 2014 is still stalled in February!

However.  I decided it was time to find the commitment and join in.  And serendipitously, Shelley from Spincushions announced a brand new one, called GREG.

Why GREG, you ask? Well, it was a bit of a joke that turned into a cool acrostic title: Grand and Resplendent Endeavour in Gaiety. Cool, hey?

So then there was the task of choosing the yarn.  I have a lot of yarn in my stash, but not enough of one colour to make an entire blanket, and I really wanted to follow Shelley’s lead and make a solid colour blanket.  I hit the ordering machine and after about 45 minutes going back and forth between yarns and their costs, I chose Drops Belle.

Drops Belle

The yarn is a Cotton, Viscose and Linen blend and uses a 4mm hook.  It’s soft and has a slight sheen, but isn’t shiny like mercerised yarn.  It can also be machine washed which is a real bonus when making a blanket.

I immediately had to make a test square to see how it felt, and thankfully it was a good choice.  The square looked great!

Test square using Drops Belle

Then all I had to do was wait for the CAL to start.  I’m not alone in thinking that the waiting is the hardest part, am I?

Finally (well, a week and a half later), the first square was released.  TOM (Talismatic and Officially Marvellous) is beautiful and wonderfully mindful.  I have a feeling that all the squares will be great exercises in mindfulness actually.

Now I have to wait for the second instalment, in a few days…

Do you participate in CALs?  Which is/was your favourite?

*If you haven’t hear the term CAL before, it means Crochet Along, and is essentially a joint project between a designer (or designers) and anybody who would like to join.  It’s essentially like a giant group crochet session, with everyone sharing pictures and experiences, and it really builds a community.

Peek-a-Boo Button Wrap Video Tutorial, by It’s All in a Nutshell

I am SO excited to be able to bring this video tutorial to you!  When I first created the Peek-a-Boo Button Wrap I thought: I should make a video for this, but well, I talk a bit fast (thanks nerves) and I don’t have a video camera, so I didn’t.

But when the opportunity arose for Esther from It’s all in a Nutshell to do this for me I grabbed it!  Of course you would know Esther if you use videos with crochet, she’s the voice behind the Sophie’s Universe videos and the recent Flight of Fancy CAL videos.  Quite a pedigree, wouldn’t you agree?

Esther published the video today, and you can view it here:

There are also some insanely good tips and tricks on Esther’s site – tips that hadn’t even occurred to me, including her “No More Mistakes” chart here:

It's all in a nutshell

In the video Esther used Scheepjes Bloom which is a comparable weight to the Stone Washed XL and a great summer alternative.

Thanks so much for doing this for me Esther, I am grateful beyond words!

Be sure to check out all of Esther’s fabulous posts and videos, she has the coolest tutorial voice ever!

You can find my original pattern here, and the Dutch version here.  Enjoy!
